Prague CastleDeer Moat Prague

What is the Deer Moat?

The Prague Deer Moat or Stag Moat, also known as Jelení příkop is a picturesque ravine located next to Prague Castle. Carved by the Brusnice Stream, it historically served as a natural defensive barrier. During the reign of Emperor Rudolf II, the area was transformed into a hunting ground for deer, giving it its name. Today, it offers a serene escape with lush greenery, scenic trails, and a historic pedestrian tunnel.

Why visit the Prague Deer Moat?

History of the Prague Castle Deer Moat

  • 10th Century: The Brusnice Stream naturally carves out a deep ravine, serving as a defensive barrier for Prague Castle.
  • 16th Century: Emperor Rudolf II transforms the area into a royal hunting ground for deer, giving it the name “Deer Moat.”
  • 17th-18th Century: The moat remains a part of the castle’s fortifications, and at one point, bears were kept here to deter intruders.
  • 19th Century: The hunting grounds are abandoned, and the area is gradually left to nature.
  • 20th Century:
  • Under Communist rule, parts of the Deer Moat are closed to the public as Prague Castle becomes a government headquarters.
  • The moat is occasionally opened for visitors but remains largely inaccessible.
  • 2002: A pedestrian tunnel designed by Josef Pleskot is added, reconnecting the Upper and Lower Moat for easier access.
  • Present Day: The Deer Moat is open seasonally, offering visitors a peaceful escape into nature near Prague Castle.
